Phonics Flip Book
Example Use

Before you begin using the Flip Tool make sure your child is familiar with the letters of the alphabet and the sound of each letter. You can use the thumbnail pictures on pages 3 and 4 to do so.

1

Flip to page 2 of the Flip Tool and locate the Word Families. Choose a simple word family from list B.

In this case we will choose 'at'.

2

On page 2, make a note of beginning sounds from list A that will form words. For example:

cat, fat, mat, sat, rat

You can also locate the entire word family from the word list in the back of the book.

3

Open the Flip Book to page 3 (short vowel sounds) and locate the letter 'A'.

Point to 'A' and say:

Can you tell me what this picture is?
Very good! This is a picture of an apple.

Listen as I say the beginning sound of this word: "a", "a", "apple"

Now let me hear you say the sound.

Listen as the child repeats the 'a' sound. Praise him after he responds.

4

On the same page, locate the letter 'T'.

Point to 'T' and say:

Can you tell me what this picture is?
Very good! This is a picture of a Tiger.

Listen as I say the beginning sound of this word: "t", "t", "tiger"

Now let me hear you say the sound.

Listen as the child repeats the 't' sound. Praise him after he responds.

5

In the flipbook, turn to the columns.

In the 5th column find the letter 'A'.

In the 6th column find the letter 'T' and say:

Show me the letter A. Very good!

Show me the letter T. Very good!

Now listen as I blend A and T

(point to each letter as you say the SOUND of the letter - do not say the name of the letter)

"a", "t", "at".
"a", "t", "at".

Let us do that together.
"a", "t", "at".
"a", "t", "at".

Now let me listen to you as you do it.
Good job!

When your student is comfortable combining 'a' and 't', introduce the beginning sounds you chose in step 2: cat, fat, mat, sat, rat

6

In this example we will use the word 'cat'.

Point to 'C' and say:

Can you tell me what this picture is?
Very good! This is a picture of a Cat.

Listen as I say the beginning sound of this word: "c", "c", "cat"

Now let me hear you say the sound.

Listen as the child repeats the 'c' sound. Praise him after he responds.
